Letter: Actions show Sununu’s true priorities

Monday, July 30, 2018

Gov. Chris Sununu’s recent actions reinforce that he cares more about the Republican Party than the lives and livelihoods of the residents of New Hampshire.

Despite calling for a special legislative session to pass an online tax bill that would protect New Hampshire businesses by setting up legal barriers before other states could collect sales taxes from New Hampshire businesses, Sununu was nowhere near the State House when the bill was being discussed and voted upon. Rather Sununu chose to remain in Aspen, Colo., at the Republican Governors’ Association conference instead of being in Concord to make sure the bill passed.

Moreover, while in Aspen, ignoring the fact that 73 percent of New Hampshire residents are pro-choice, he signed a Republican governors’ letter in support of Donald Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh.

Sununu’s Republican counterparts in Vermont and Massachusetts, Govs. Phil Scott and Charlie Baker, saw no compelling reason to sign the letter. Kavanaugh’s recent writings in Garza v. Hargan indicate his clear intent to obstruct and deny women their reproductive rights. Sununu’s decision to sign the letter clearly belies his tepid claim that he is pro-choice and his decision to be absent during this week’s legislative session belies his claim that he is committed to protecting New Hampshire businesses.
