Letter: EPA’s damaging agenda continues

Published: 7/30/2018 11:00:49 PM

President Trump has nominated Judge Brett Kavanaugh to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the U.S. Supreme Court. The nomination of Kavanaugh makes clear that Trump is determined to enact his corporate polluter agenda in all branches of government.

To date, the Supreme Court has established precedents underscoring the EPA’s authority to enforce bedrock public health protections like the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. But with Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court, these bedrock environmental policies – including the EPA’s endangerment finding – could be undercut and make it harder for the agency to carry out its mission of protecting our health and the environment.

Kavanaugh’s nomination and potential threats to the legal standing of our environmental safeguards comes at the same time that EPA acting administrator Andrew Wheeler is carrying out disgraced former EPA chief Scott Pruitt’s dangerous proposal to limit the science that the agency can consider when making decisions regarding protecting public health. So while Scott Pruitt might be out at the EPA, his toxic anti-science agenda continues, and Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court could contribute to the Trump Administration’s lasting damage to our health and the environment.
