Firefighters in New Hampshire said careless disposal of smoking materials and medical oxygen equipment appear to have contributed to a house fire where two people were found dead.

The state fire marshal’s office says that Larry and Pauline Hall were found dead in their Merrimack home on Tuesday. They were both 84. The medical examiner’s office says the manner of death is accidental.

No working smoke alarms were found inside the home.

Fire Chief Michael Currier said they were notified of the fire when someone knocked on the door of a substation saying they could smell smoke.
